2 x 2 Anathema
I am often asked what I think is wrong with the field of psychology, and I usually respond by presenting my argument at its most general level, a schematic or blueprint, if you will. This overview is made necessary by the sheer number and diversity of criticisms invited by academics and practitioners in psychology across research, training, teaching, and mental health delivery. In brief, this 'brief' that I am filing with the American public is anything but brief. An aerial view of my argument (something so massive as to be visible from space) reveals two two-pronged cases, or alternatively, a 2 x 2 matrix. These points are unpacked, or fleshed out, across the 8 points memo.
Case 1: Psychology Fails to Both Train and Educate (i.e., as a career
and as a vocation)
Prong A. (Train) psychology fails to provide its majors with skills that
will distinguish psychology majors as competitive candidates for
certain private or public sector markets
Prong B. (Educate) psychological research and teaching is not equipped to
address psychologistic phenomena at the heart of the human condition
and thus fail to satisfy our curiosity or even to whet our appetites
Case 2: Psychology Erodes Human Nature in Both its Students and its
Subject Matter
Prong A. (Students) psychology professors betray their own values of
ethics, empathy, and evidence when they harass graduate students or
assassinate their character in committee meetings, usually based on
vague, unscrupulous, and unsubstantiated inferences drawn violently
about the 'professionalism' of students who do not fit their image
Prong B. (Subject) this is a dispassionate sociological analysis of
unessential and arbitrary norms that undermine the capacity of
research and teaching to explore the human condition with any
adequacy, accuracy, and authenticity.
