A July 8 letter from an anonymous source inside the Slavic Languages Department of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) adds the abuse of graduate students by program faculty to a growing list of complaints about the system of training academics. The letter reads Your work on the mechanics of graduate school in psychology struck a nerve with those of us in other disciplines who have experienced similar phenomena in our attempt to trek through graduate school (in this case Slavic Languages at UCLA). Just going through what you had written it was quite clear that you have an intimate understanding of the way academe works (or doesn't work), and how some faculty members manipulate the system to their advantage. (Not that hard to do, really , since the system is already set up to their advantage.) Good luck with yoru book and good luck to your wife in finishing her program." " The letter explains the recent cascade of visitors from UCLA. Complete with evidentiary files, the author, in collaboration with his peers, created Graduatestudentabuse.org to document and disseminate their experience of abuse. "Our experience, and our interpretation of that experience, have been posted as a website, www.graduatestudentabuse.org. This may or may not be relevant to your current research and writing efforts, but we did want to make you aware of the website's existence."

Over the years letters have poured into Wyatt Ehrenfels arguing that various elements of his critique apply broadly across academic disciplines. In recent years the process of applying to doctoral programs has come under fire, as aspiring academics write Ehrenfels citing everything ranging from dispositional factors to favoritism in the delivery of counseling services or material assistance to advisees. "Some students get an accuarte and adequate picture of what it means to apply to graduate school, and others do not. Some even get material assistance from their advisors. 'Apply here. I published a paper or co-moderated a plenary with a couple faculty there. They know me. A letter of recommendation from me -- or a phone call -- will carry some weight'. It all depends on the professor and the professor-student relationships. Some profs as a matter of policy or personality will provide this kind of assistance to their advisees, and their advisees have a decisive advantage. Some profs will reserve this kind of assistance for likeable or like-minded students, regardless of their academic performance."

And it would seem departments of psychology are just about the only corner within the university from which Ehrenfels has not fielded personal communications admonishing universality in the social construction or corruption of scientific research by career requirements. Ehrenfels admits that it has never been his priority to clearly label his grievances as ~psychology problems~ or ~university problems~. "There are clearly problems that are unique to the study of human nature or that uniquely affect the advancement of knowledge about the human condition. I am responsible for what happens within my own wheelhouse," writes Ehrenfels. "I do not have experiences, training, or doctorates in other fields. I can not always be accurate or authoritative in my comments about what happens inside a department of sociology or school of medicine."
