Answering the Critics:
XI. On the Charge of [Inability to Tolerate Criticism]
NOTE
Fireflies in the Shadow of the Sun available again at Barnes & Noble.com
I chortle in the general direction of these vague references that have a drive-by quality to them (owing to their insincerity), to my inability to tolerate criticism. The most recent illustration of this kind of allegation comes from an anonymous source in a psychology "news group." Over the years persons delivering the kind of criticism of Wyatt Ehrenfels that crosses the line from subjective judgment into libelous spin and fabrication have been unwilling to own up to the messages with their real names. And unlike Wyatt Ehrenfels, whose assumed name protects him from professionals, goons, and some goon-like behavior from professionals, the author of a message like the following uses an alias just to avoid ownership of a lie:
JWE would be so much better off just accepting the fact that the academic world isn't quite for them and enjoying their interests in psychology as a hobby. If [he] could just manage to behave semi-decently and present [his] ideas in a somewhat rational and coherent manner. Learn to accept a little criticism, basically.
This is actually the most civility I have seen from this counterintelligent person in the 15 months or so that he's been assigned to shadow my press releases/activities. Nevertheless, his statement that I do not tolerate criticism, which follows up on months of similar charges that I could not tolerate criticism as a graduate student, implies that the criticism I received was sound academic feedback from psychology professors supervising my training as a research psychologist. On the contrary, I rarely received any negative feedback for my academic performance. I maintained a greater than 3.9 GPA throughout my graduate career at the institution that awarded my PhD. My performance on the 3-day doctoral qualifying examination was deemed "generally excellent" and my dissertation received rave reviews from my committee. When we suspend judgment on the lying, only two explanations remain for the intolerance-to-criticism allegation. The individual may have misread or misunderstood my position as it is represented on my web site (my web logs recorded well over a hundred visits from the author of the charge). Many psych profs did not like the choices I made with that which was generally placed at my discretion. And the psych profs were well aware of that fact, which is why I was never required, or even asked, to withdraw from any graduate program. The author of this allegation may be attempting to reverse the direction of the criticism claim, as it is I who call the psychological community on its inability to tolerate criticism (not to mention unconventional wisdom and generally the kind of diverse thinking that takes place in the absence of rules or constraints. Psychology professors formulate a lot of new policy to close these loopholes so that their students training will effectively tunnel them toward their fates as clones, chamelions, and creatures of imprimatur. The fact most of this policy is unwritten or maintained at the level of individual professors or departments of psychology indicates its distance from legitimate scientific parameters/imperatives. It's almost as if psych profs are unwilling to own up to what they want to see from their students (not unlike the anonymity-clad author of the allegation). They don't want to have to defend their theoretical preferences and methodological proclivities nor do they want to wander the universe of what is viable to weigh the merits of someone else's thinking. But notice as you descend the ladder (scientific community --> psychological community --> psychology department --> individual professor) that the delta (i.e. discrepancy) between what is acceptable to the scientific community varies increasingly from what is regarded as 'required' by subordinate agencies. For this reason, no psych prof has ever wanted to challenge me now -- as Wyatt Ehrenfels -- on the ability to tolerate criticism, but as my supervisors they were perfectly willing to harass me for failing to take direction as a graduate student. And that's what it boils down to. I have always been perfectly willing and able to tolerate diverging points of view. But they wanted me to take direction, not criticism. And it's not as if I ever refused to comply. Like almost all graduate students, I danced on their strings for years. They did not like the fact they had to ask me to make adjustments. And they punished me for it. They punished me for making them ask, making them see beyond the status quo, making them question (at least to themselves) the singularity of their approaches.
