Argument Aided by Rhetoric

One way to dissuade credulity in Wyatt's argument is to divide his skills between two distinct domains (e.g., "Dr. Ehrenfels may be a great rhetoritician. I give him that. But that is all he is"). The implication here is that Wyatt is disingenuously, like a scheming politician or sophist, winning people over with the power of words alone. There are those in the field who have expressed fear that Wyatt's level of verbal sophistication can conceal any thought-disordered argument (e.g., "...using his logic to brainwash people"). In their view, regardless of how inane his logic or facts may be, somehow Wyatt can cover them up with elegant phrases and clever, contagious mantras. When initially presented with this argument, Wyatt's knee-jerk reaction was "well, they can't think too much of the public. We learned to listen to Bill Clinton with tongue planted firmly in cheek. We could certainly avoid being brainwashed by J. Wyatt Ehrenfels." I have one piece of advice for these critics. If you want to attack Ehrenfels for having poor or faulty ideas, you need to say something about the ideas. You need to include what you think is wrong with the ideas. Wyatt has appealed to one vocal critic, who repeatedly refers to "obvious" flaws and irrationality in Wyatt's views, but the critic refuses to comment beyond that.

Of course Wyatt never fully learned how to relate to other members of the field on a rational level. They all march in lock step behind some manual and where none exists, they seek to discuss the creation of some manual or policy as part of some committee. They hardly invest any pride or development in their thinking. So of course they fear words, and thoughts too. They look skeptically upon any source of possibilities that is not controlled. They are hardly in any position to evaluate my words.

Wyatt admits to using a maesure of hard-line hyperbole on occasion. "I can be a bit edgy, sure. But what better way to clarify and capture the essential kernel of your argument than to be plain. Sure, there is room for some qualification around the fringes of my arguments. This is Psychology. We are admittedly dealing with complex issues and institutions. But I believe so strongly in the core of my positions that I say it loudly and clearly and, if someone wants to find an exception or a qualification that makes my statement more accurate, well, we can negotiate such an understanding. But people need to know the bottom line and the bottom line we should not be selling them is that 'well, this is complex. Psychology is an inexact science.' Contrary to what complaints people hang on my presentation style, it is that kind of hedging that is obfuscating, not my poignancy. It's easier to hedge the truth once you have the truth. But it would seem many of my critics are looking for the truth in the walls of a hedge maze."

And there are those who take issue with the "mixture of first- and third-person statements" on the web site. "I don't understand why some of my critics find that so unethical, perhaps because they don't know who is speaking and surmise that it is the same person weaving an illusion of credibility. In some places, this is the case. I will compose an essay using the third-person but then, quoting another one of my own sources, will shift to first person. In other cases, you have another author entirely quoting me. The presentation of ideas is the principal factor driving these choices, with a secondary factor being that it is important to keep readers focused on the ideas rather than on the messenger."
